The holiday season can introduce multiple stressors: chillier or unpredictable weather and shorter days can trigger feelings of depression; if you’re isolated from loved ones you might feel loneliness; and if you’re one of the special elves that coordinate holiday fun for your family, you may feel stress managing all of the extra responsibilities this month. To enjoy the magic you’re creating, please make time for your mental health. IMPOWER’s Clinical Director, Judy Charuhas, has curated 7 mental health tips for managing holiday stress:

  1. Talk to someone: Reach out to a friend, family member, or support line. Write a letter or greeting card to someone who helped you—it can be cathartic even if you don’t send it.
  2. Take a walk: Start or end your day with a calming morning or evening walk. To make this a regular habit and get the added benefit of good company, you might consider joining a walking group or community wellness program.
  3. Volunteer: Helping others can lift your spirits—consider volunteering at a school, hospital, museum, or place of worship.
  4. Limit alcohol: Keep drinking in moderation to avoid worsening feelings of sadness or depression.
  5. Set realistic expectations: The holidays don’t have to be perfect; keep goals manageable. Prioritize your regular routine to maintain stability, and choose additional holiday activities and preparations that can fit comfortably in your schedule. You may consider keeping a calendar or daily to-do list if it helps you remember your responsibilities and feel some control over your days.
  6. Get enough sleep: Aim for 7 hours nightly and practice relaxation techniques before bed.
  7. If in crisis: Call 988 for immediate support if you’re feeling overwhelmed or in danger.
