Comprehensive Behavioral Health Assessment
What is a CBHA?
A Comprehensive Behavioral Health Assessment (CBHA) is an in-depth evaluation designed for children and teens in the child welfare system. It looks at each child’s emotional, social, behavioral, and developmental health while also identifying their strengths and support needs.
The CBHA provides culturally sensitive, actionable strategies for case managers and placement providers, helping children in their care overcome challenges and thrive.
Who Needs a CBHA?
Under Florida Statute Chapter 39, a CBHA is referred for any child who:
- Is a victim of abuse, neglect, or abandonment and placed in shelter care
- Is involved in the Juvenile Delinquency System
- Has a serious emotional disturbance
- Is at risk of placement in a residential treatment setting
Purpose & Process
The CBHA integrates:
- Historical information and previous evaluations
- Psychological testing results
- Professional observations and interviews
- Collateral input from caregivers, teachers, and other providers
The goal is to make informed recommendations for permanency planning and services in the child’s best interest. A CBHA also includes a formal diagnosis based on all gathered information.
