ALPHA Prevention Program
Helping Students Thrive Socially, Emotionally, and Academically
The ALPHA Prevention Program is a free, evidence-based, school-based initiative provided by IMPOWER to support students in Seminole County who may be struggling with emotional or behavioral patterns that interfere with academic success.
Who We Serve
Currently offered at eight Seminole County Public Schools, ALPHA supports elementary, middle, and high school students who:
- Display behavioral or emotional challenges
- Are at risk for academic failure or substance use
Our Approach
Founded in 2008, ALPHA focuses on preventing early substance use by strengthening protective factors and reducing risk factors before students are exposed to alcohol, marijuana, or prescription drugs.
We use a collaborative, holistic model that engages:
- Students
- Parents and families
- Teachers
- Mentoring staff
Together, we work to build a positive environment that fosters personal growth, emotional development, and academic improvement.
Impact
In 2024, ALPHA served 317 students across 8 Seminole County schools.
Students who participated in substance use prevention services for at least 75% of the school year saw an average 42% increase in prevention knowledge by third grade.
Program Benefits
Students participating in ALPHA gain:
- Individual goal setting
- Mindfulness and emotional regulation skills
- Behavior modification strategies
- Positive encouragement and improved self-esteem
- Enhanced decision-making and peer relationships
- Greater understanding of tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse
